class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mary Beth Scott:&nbsp; An Appreciation<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">by Sheila Barry<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\">I became aware of Mary Beth Scott around 5<sup>th<\/sup> grade.&nbsp; I knew who she was (kind of) before that but we had never been in the same class and I had never talked to her before that time.&nbsp; I became aware of her because her sister, Karen, was \u201cdating\u201d my brother, Thom.&nbsp; They were both a year ahead of us in school (can you \u201cdate\u201d someone in 6<sup>th<\/sup> grade?).&nbsp; Anyway, Karen and Thom were a thing for a while and their romance led me to my friendship with Bethie.&nbsp; We started talking on the phone as one did when you were ten back then.&nbsp; There was something different about her; mostly she was funny and made me laugh.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:36% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"590\" height=\"639\" src=\"https:\/\/catizone.uk\/stelizabethclass1974\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Beth-a-e1729612395244-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1207 size-thumbnail\" class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bethie lived with her mom and sister in the Marhoefer apartments off the Cloverleaf in Pleasant Hill at the time.&nbsp; I thought that was so exotic \u2013 apartment living seemed so sexy and cosmopolitan! And they had shag carpeting \u2013 so cool!&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we went into high school, Bethie and our group of friends, Joanne Hamilton (Herald), Rita Atkinson (Showalter), Karen Bucy (Barbarich), Sue Floyd (Starceski), and Kate Oravec became a close-knit crew.&nbsp; Many adventures occurred, some that I still keep under wraps\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 28%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bethie was always laughing \u2013 that is what I remember about her the most.&nbsp; She had such a droll wit and a wicked sense of humor.&nbsp; This is what we looked like when we were together in high school.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"261\" height=\"253\" src=\"https:\/\/catizone.uk\/stelizabethclass1974\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Bethie2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1151 size-full\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bethie went to college and grad school, got a master\u2019s in occupational therapy and had a successful career in that field. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"449\" src=\"https:\/\/catizone.uk\/stelizabethclass1974\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Beth-b.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1182 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/catizone.uk\/stelizabethclass1974\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Beth-b.jpg 624w, https:\/\/catizone.uk\/stelizabethclass1974\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Beth-b-300x216.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bethie loved Halloween.&nbsp; She would dress up every year and would have her mom sit in a chair, looking out the window, to scare the kids.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our friend group scattered a bit, and I moved away.&nbsp; The times we were all able to get together as the years slid by were fewer but so precious. I got a card and note from Theresa Grecco who as we all remember was gravely ill, Theresa sent me encouraging messages, well wishes, and prayers. She was such a beautiful kind soul! She passed away a year later.
