About the prints

Paeonia rockii is a shrub, found growing wild in SW China, with saucer-sized white flowers dramatically marked in red on the base of the ruffled petals. In my garden it flowers in May. Seedlings may have pink or yellowish petals. The images show different states of the print: pure line etching with watercolour additions; line with hand-colouring; etching with aquatint on the background and leaves to show up the white flower.

About Catherine

I was happy to be able to join the Oxford Print-makers’ Co-op at the beginning of this year in time to get started before the pandemic. After working for 30 years as an art-on-paper conservator, I wanted to return to the etching process I had enjoyed as a student. With the help of the technicians at the Oxford studio, I’ve started to use aquatint to give my natural history drawings depth and tone. The results are exciting, and I look forward to developing more skill with the technique, in the collegiate atmosphere at Christadelphian Hall.
