About Sue

Trained at the Central School of Art and Design, London and at Bristol University.

The subjects of my prints vary between landscapes and more urban settings, sometimes including people to add a sense of scale and narrative.

I usually start with drawings done on site which are then refined to make use of what I consider to be the most important elements.

Linocuts encourage a selective process that lends itself to strong, graphic design and the use of bold lines and flat areas of colour. This results in a decorative quality that I enjoy. Each additional colour requires further cutting and printing which involves careful decisions about colour use. I usually have a colour scheme in mind that plays a large part in defining the image.

However, one of the pleasures of printmaking is that your original ideas are often diverted along the way, taking the work in unexpected directions. I show in galleries and Art Fairs, including The Watts Gallery, Surrey, the Biscuit Factory, Newcastle, Bankside, London, the Affordable Art Fair in Battersea, West Dean, Sussex and Art in Action at Waterperry.

I have also made illustrations for books, recently the Oxford Art Book. I teach linocut, woodcut and monoprinting, previously at Art in Action and from my own studio.

A member of the Oxford Printmakers Cooperative, and the Oxford Art Society.
